Transience Is Home

I could say that I am at Antioch because of my familiarity with transience. I’ve moved 23 times in the continental US in 24 years. Home has always been somewhat synonymous with impermanence. It is a shifting paradigm – the place changes, the people change, but the concept remains.

People always ask “why?” Military brat is sometimes included with a question mark. Admittedly, part of it was not under my control. My parents were actually in radio (my father still is), both moved when they split, and I bounced between them for most of my childhood. Compelled somehow by their tradition of moving every year or two, I couldn’t stay still in my adult life. Antioch itself is my third college. And I leave every other term or so. How long have you been here?

This is my seventh year. I came here in 1999.

How did you end up here?

I came here as an exchange student when I was in college at Kyoto Seika University. My major was humanities. I wanted to work an international job. Then, I didn’t know specifics about what job I wanted. My uncle worked at United Nations and he always talked about different countries’ culture so I got interested in working with and studying different cultures. We had three choices at my University: Thailand, Australia, and the US. I went to Thailand when I was in high school, so I chose the US that time. But I still loved Thailand. The people are so nice and the weather was too. But I wanted to see non-Asian countries. And for Australia you had to do homestay, but at Antioch I could stay in the dorm, so I chose here.

Street Fair was Fair

How about a little Street Fair talk? What can I say? We’ve done it again. First of all, I’d like to thank Foster for participating in the B-Boy/ African Drum and Rhythm workshop. I would also like to thank Private Pile and Cory for playing as well. Next, I’d like to thank the dancers that took time and energy to fulfill the workshop. Last, I’d like to thank you, the people, and the kids especially, for attending. The weather was fair. People were walking up and down Xenia Avenue and Cory Street. Vendors did their best to increase sales. Good food spread all around downtown Yellow Springs. These are my thoughts as I arrived carrying two drums and a book. My phone rang like crazy up until 3:30pm. Had I known that we were going to have children doing cartwheels and handstands, perhaps I would have requested to start at an earlier time. But whatever.

Now, in order to build a civilization, there are several things that need to be addressed.

1.) Do I have the tools? (Meaning knowledge)
2.) Do I have the numbers? (The people)
3.) Do I have the health?
4.) Do I have the capital?

Stay with me. The civilization symbolizes a nation of educated students embarking on better ways to entertain, educate, evolve, and preserve community.

I have dedicated my life for such moments as these. We were in front of the bank, surrounded by crowds off people that were educated on our culture. Some people had no idea such cultures existed.

To prove a point, it was the children that could dance as if no one was looking. It was the children that were innocent. It’s the children’s innocence we live preserve. It’s not money’s capital we need the most, it’s the spirit’s capital. It’s the spirit of togetherness before anything else. The people are the numbers we need internationally to merge like we do at Street Fairs, Black and Tans, C-Shops, Malls, name it.

Let’s continue to build. Success will surely follow. Civilizations will by strong. Music will by inspiration. Drums will move millions and millions will come together thus making one huge Street Fair. This is Charles Arthur.

Teach-In Series Concluded with Panel Discussion

A panel discussion in the McGregor building capped off a week of teachins concerning rights and wrongs in the global war on terror. A small but engaged audience consisted of Antioch students, faculty members, and locals from Yellow Springs. The panel was comprised of four experts: Dr. William O’Brien, who works for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Gordon Chapman, who worked for the CIA and military intelligence following WWII, Julie Gallagher, a historian and the Ohio coordinator for Amnesty International, and Antioch’s own Dr. Hassan Nejhad who specializes in Middle East Affairs.

Antioch professor Jean Gregorek, PHD, warmed up the audience with a concise but precise introduction to the discussion topic. Jean began by recapping the events of the past few days, which included films and teach-ins. She also informed the audience about the Military Commissions Act, which recently passed Congress. Jean explained how the act gives the CIA and military unprecedented power, including “The power to incarcerate prisoners of war indefinitely? and “absolute power to decide the fate of these so called enemies?. After the introduction, Jean handed the microphone over to the panel members.

Hassan spoke first. His presentation was strong, and spiked the interest of the audience. He began “torture is nothing new? but then stated, “It is a shame that it is still with us?. The audience was visibly engaged at this point. Hassan gave an overview of definitions of what torture is, how the Bush administration defines torture, and international laws governing torture, including the Geneva Convention. He spoke passionately, citing examples of US conduct that could be described as torture, before demonstrating how such actions are defined as torture by international law. Hassan cut through the confusion surrounding the issue of torture. He explained the governing bodies that prosecute torture, the documents that define torture, and how the USA has violated these guidelines.

Dr. William O’Brien was next, speaking about the psychology of POW’s (prisoners of war). His 33 years of experience working in clinical psychology for the Dept. of Veteran Affairs made him uniquely suited to address these topics. O’Brien gave chilling tales of former POW’s and how their experiences have mentally scarred them for life. Listening to his tales, it was hard not to feel terrible for the CIA’s prisoners, regardless of what crimes they stand accused of. The Doctor also spoke about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its effects. PTSD is common and severe with many POWs.

Gordon Chapman, who worked in military intelligence, had terrific insight to convey in his lecture. Since 1993, he has worked for Veterans for Peace, a non-profit whose function is explained by its name. Gordie shone some perspective on the matter. He cited examples of US terrorism before 9/11, including the relocation of Japanese-American citizens during WWII and covert actions/operations in Latin America. Gordon also noted that “Ho Chi Minh was a US ally in WWII?, drawling a parallel to Osama Bin Laden, another former US ally. He then spoke about torture at the CIA during his career there. Years after leaving, he found out about incidents of torture that allegedly went on just doors from his office without his knowledge. Dr. Julie Gallagher (also an Antioch professor) wrapped things up with a lively speech. She spoke about an anti-torture bill, which failed to pass Congress. This bill would have prevented many of the abuses allowed by the Military Commissions Act. The MCA allows for all kinds of outrageous conduct, suspends the writ of Habeas Corpus, and gives the government unprecedented and maybe illegal powers. Julie, the regional coordinator for Amnesty international, talked about her group’s extensive anti-torture work. She made an excellent point, saying at this point we need to at minimum “regain the human rights that have been lost?, but ideally need to do far, far more.

The evening ended with a brief, but lively, Q&A. The intelligent and thoughtful comments demonstrated how much the audience had soaked up from the panel. The questions ranged from the Supreme Court’s response to what course of action concerned citizens should take next. Hassan explained that parts of the bill may be turned down, but reiterated the urgency of the situation by saying “it could take time and the government can go ahead in the mean time?, meaning the government could continue to torture until such changes are made.

International Student Describes Her First Month at Antioch

“Write something about the differences between your home university and Antioch…? Mmmmh, where am I supposed to start?! Explaining the difference between the German and the American educational system would take me for ever, but to compare Antioch to Tübingen…Let’s begin with the very basics: We don’t pay for university (well, they are going to make us pay 500 euros a term from summer 2007 on, but that’s pretty much nothing compared to tuition in the US). We don’t have to take a certain amount of credits per term (you could do nothing at all or maybe one class, or if you’re absolutely insane, don’t like to sleep and would rather live on coffee 24/7 you could take 30 hours of classes per week; they just expect you to have certain credits after your second year). We divide our academic year into 2 semesters, each followed by a break (2 months after the winter semester and 3 months in summer; technically they are “lecture free times? and you’re supposed to write term papers, do internships or research projects etc but it’s more like almost half a year of vacation…). We don’t need p.e. credits (if you don’t want to get some exercise after graduating from high school, no one is able to force you to move your body). We have more than one photocopier in our library (copy machines are a student’s best friend… we usually don’t buy expensive textbooks, we just xerox them). Maybe I should stop making you jealous… It seems like we have more freedom, but hey, we don’t get free prints and it usually takes us more than 5 minutes to get to our classrooms… ; )
