All Antiochians who have seen the work of the Alumni Board should applaud their efforts to provide much needed financial support for the college. It is hard to understand why the University would refuse the alumni and the college would refuse of such generosity from these folks based upon the statement that the conditions for self-governance can not be considered seriously. In the interest of the future of the college, it is incumbent upon the Trustees of Antioch University to recognize this generosity by negotiating in good faith, and seeking a compromise on individual issues regarding the conditions expressed. The spectacular work of the Alumni Board and alumni of Antioch College to support their college's full time tenured faculty, and to identify critical needs of the college, and by so doing, raising substantial funds for the college needs to be recognized. The primacy of the college mission, its name, history, and ethos is not only a fair question in continuing the college and university existence, but the right approach to rebuild for the future. The coverage of the Antioch Record has been informative about the conflicts between various parties has been better than many past issues of the paper. Rather than view the conditions for the college as a hinderance, or financial impossibility before all support can be gathered to save the college, or adopting an inflexible stance on the issues, the University should consider its promise to do what is possible to keep the college open, and prove to members of the faculty, administration, and students at Antioch College that the good faith efforts by an increasingly large group of people will be honored on a clear time table. Where many alums have had issues with what might be on the table regarding the future of the college, it would be hard to find anyone who hasn't recognized how Antioch University has been shown the light that cooperation is the key to resolving the financial and systemic problems that have plagued Antioch College for years. The question is not merely how Antioch College needs to change to thrive, but how Antioch University must change to honor the values of the parent institution. There is no Antioch University without Antioch College, and this viewer feels the two "separate" parts of the larger institution can only be led by individuals who are willing to negotiate in good faith. The measure of good faith in this instance will be shown as the demonstration of constructive actions taken by ALL parties. In this viewer's opinion, the Alumni Board has opened the dialogue and has taken a whole series of constructive actions that show they understand the true Antioch Spirit. Let us hope for an early Christmas present that Antioch College will obtain its own Board of Trustees, and find themselves on the road to a bright future.
